2024 WATCH: Newsom Wants to Debate DeSantis...but Why?

Seeing as it is very unlikely that anyone will be announcing their 2024 candidacy ahead of the coming midterm elections of 2022, we as Americans are left to read between the lines.

Lucky for us, the way our political system is set up, those lines can be pretty obtuse, and the writing on the wall between them is in a rather large font.

This week, it became incredibly obvious that California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to be playing politics on the big stage in the coming months, and to prove it, he’d picking on the fastest rising star in the Republican Party.

While California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been somewhat reluctant to discuss debating the man running against him this fall, he offered a detailed proposal for a debate with a different politician 2,500 miles away.

“Hey @GovRonDeSantis,” wrote Newsom on Friday afternoon on Twitter, “clearly you’re struggling, distracted, and busy playing politics with people’s lives. Since you have only one overriding need — attention — let’s take this up & debate.”

The Golden State liberal appeared rather serious about it.

Newsom also tagged @CNN, apparently as a proposed host for the debate.

He also responded to DeSantis’ “hair gel” quip about him earlier in the day — “I think his hair gel is interfering with his brain function” — with “I’ll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Name the time before Election Day.”

While DeSantis hasn’t yet openly discussed a potential 2024 bid, he has been making some rather telling maneuvers of late, including courting mega-donors in Utah several weeks ago.

If Newsom thinks that he will also be vying for a spot in that election, (with his Florida counterpart a likely general election opponent), it would behoove him to get some shots in nice and early.
