The people of Florida have long been a bit jaded by the idea of hurricanes, having lived with the threat of these powerful autumn storms for as long as they’ve been in the Sunshine State.

Often, when a hurricane threatens Floridians, the reactions range from abject dismissal to quiet caution.  After all, this isn’t anything new for residents of the Sunshine State.

But this week, as the unpredictable and powerful Hurricane Ian begins to make itself a menace on a path toward the Gulf of Mexico, hundreds of thousands of residents are being forced to flee.

Tropical Storm Ian strengthened into Hurricane Ian on Monday morning as coastal residents brace for major impacts from the storm as the week progresses.

Hurricane status was declared at around 5 a.m. as the storm’s winds strengthened to 75 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The National Weather Service warned later Monday morning that a life-threatening storm surge was possible along much of the Florida west coast, with the highest risk from Fort Myers to the Tampa Bay region.

“With Hurricane Ian fast approaching, it’s imperative that Floridians prepare NOW to protect themselves and their families,” Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried tweeted Monday, urging residents to listen to local authorities and prepare.

At least 300,000 people are being told to leave the Tampa Bay area, as the shallow body of water could easily see 10-15 foot storm surges as Ian approaches, causing mass flooding and dangerous rescue conditions for first responders.

Ian’s path is still somewhat unknown, which has led to a bit of extra caution from local authorities as well.
