Alabama GOP Senate Candidate Smashes Fundraising Record Despite Trump Endorsing Opponent

Alabama Senate candidate Katie Britt has broken fundraising records, raising over $2 million in less than a month without former President Donald Trump’s endorsement.

The Britt campaign reported to the Federal Election Commission that she had raised $2.24 million since announcing her campaign, the Birmingham News reported.

The campaign said it was the most money raised in a three-month period by a Republican candidate running for federal office in Alabama.

“What a start! I’m proud to say that 90% of the money we raised came from right here in Alabama,” Britt tweeted on Tuesday.

“It is clear that the people of our state know that we don’t just need a senator from Alabama, we need a Senator FOR Alabama.”

Britt announced her candidacy on June 8 and reached the fundraising milestone in 23 days, according to Yellow Hammer News.

Do you think Trump's endorsement can make or break a candidate?

“Our Alabama First message is resonating strongly with hardworking families who want to protect our Christian conservative values and see real results — not the same old tired, empty rhetoric that politicians have been selling them for decades,” she said.

“We’re seeing and hearing this on the campaign trail every day, and these numbers certainly reinforce the incredible reception and momentum we’re experiencing on the ground.”

Britt added, “I cannot thank our supporters enough for their enthusiasm and generosity.”

Trump endorsed Britt’s opponent, Rep. Mo Brooks, in April, praising the Republican representative for his courage, CNN reported.

The former president said Brooks “will protect our Second Amendment, combat the Biden open borders agenda” and “is fighting for voter integrity (like few others).”

“With President Trump’s endorsement, it’s clearly Mo’s race to lose,” former Republican Alabama Rep. Bradley Byrne told CNN.

Lynda Blanchard, Trump’s former ambassador to Slovenia, has also tossed her hat in the ring and has put $5 million of her own money into her campaign.

Brooks’ and Blanchard’s campaigns did not respond to the Birmingham News’ request for their fundraising numbers.

Alabama’s Republican primary is scheduled for May 24, 2022.

Deadly Earthquake Hits Greece, Shocking Footage Caught on Camera

People on the island of Crete, Greece’s largest island, were jolted by a large earthquake that rumbled through on Monday at 9:17 a.m.

The epicenter of the earthquake was traced to 14 miles northwest of Arvi, a seaside village on the southeastern side of Crete, six miles deep.

Gerasimos Papadopoulos, a seismologist, said the area had been experiencing more activity than usual, and the quake was not wholly unexpected.

“This is not an event that occurred without warning,” Papadopoulos told Greece’s state broadcaster ERT, according to the BBC.

“We have seen activity in this region for several months. This was a strong earthquake, it was not under sea but under land and affecting populated areas.”

The Athens Geodynamic Institute registered it at a magnitude of 5.8, though the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre first reported it coming in at 6.5 and the United States Geological Survey said it registered as a 6.0.

One man was killed and at least nine people were injured. Many buildings — especially older ones — have experienced serious structural damage, and many streets are lined with rubble.

The man who died was working on renovating the dome of a chapel in Arkalochori, south of Heraklion, according to CNN. He was found unconscious after the church collapsed and was pronounced dead.

Since the quake, many have shared videos of the moment the earthquake hit. Security cameras show the damage as it happened, and people have been sharing their accounts of the event.

“Glasses started smashing so we ran outside by the pool,” Millie Mackay, who was on vacation from Britain with her 9-year-old daughter, told the BBC.

“There the bosses guided us to a place of safety … [The manager] was then calling out room numbers and checking if everyone was out and OK.”

“Fortunately, our home was not too badly damaged,” Evangelia Christaki, a local, said. “But the authorities have told us to stay outdoors over the next hours. In any case, we are so scared.”

Officials said that schools were closed down and 2,500 tents have been set up for those displaced, and government minister Christos Stylianidis has declared a state of emergency.

Season 47 of the popular comedy and satire show “Saturday Night Live” will feature some new faces, including an avowed socialist.

As the show’s producers prepare for the Oct. 2 premiere of its next season, SNL’s official Twitter account announced Monday that three new faces will be joining the cast: Aristotle Athari, James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman.

Among the trio, Sherman is known to be an active socialist. Known on the internet by the pseudonym “Sarah Squirm,” she is an artist and comedian who was featured in Vulture magazine’s “2018 list of Comedians You Should and Will Know.”

In a July report by The Hollywood Reporter discussing the democratic socialists in the film industry, Sherman was cited as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

According to its website, the organization believes in “Bringing Socialism from the Margins to the Mainstream.” As of 2017, according to Philadelphia Magazine, DSA is the “largest socialist group in the nation.”

The group has chapters across the country and backs Democratic policies such as the Green New Deal and Medicare for All, according to its website. The DSA also has a youth wing called Young Democratic Socialists of America.

The organization is not a political party in itself. However, some of its members have held office, such as Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

In addition to being part of an openly socialist organization, Sherman has expressed radical leftist opinions on her social media and has carried out activism on her profile, such as sharing information about fundraisers and calling for defunding the police.

“DEFUND THE POLICE @MayorOfLA!! put your money where your snout is,” she tweeted last year.

“[I’m] high on weed for the first time in two years and all i can say is …. abolish the police, my b****,” she wrote in another tweet.

The addition of Sherman to SNL is one new addition to a growing number of leftists in influential places in Hollywood.

The TV show allows radical leftists to join its cast while it has fired a comedian in the past for making politically incorrect jokes.

Shane Gillis was hired and then fired in 2019 after clippings of him making what was considered to be politically incorrect comments came to light.

“Chinatown’s f***ing nuts” Gillis was heard saying, followed by “let the f***ing ch**ks live there,” CNN reported.

“We want ‘SNL’ to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for ‘SNL.’ We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard,” SNL said in a statement.
