Alabama Governor Puts the Kibosh on Vaccine Passports

As with any major, national-scale trouble, the coronavirus provided us with a number of concerns and conspiracy theories purporting that this tragedy could be used to impinge on our freedoms in one way or another.

This isn’t unusual, though.  Troubling times often produce these narratives, as Americans looks to make sense of the chaos around us.  And, let’s not forget that there are plenty of examples of governmental overreach to be found in the wake of widespread calamity; the advent of the TSA an the PATRIOT Act being just two recent examples.

As we return to quasi-normalcy in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are worries among some that the government could use the event to tighten their control of our lives.

Not on Kay Ivey’s watch.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) has signed Senate Bill 267 to ban coronavirus vaccine passports in the Yellowhammer State.

The bill, which prohibited state and local governments from issuing vaccine passports to Alabamians, also prevents businesses in the state from refusing service to a customer based on their vaccination status.

But…

The legislation does not prevent employers from requiring their employees to receive the vaccination.

Ivey was resolute in her beliefs.

“Since the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, both Dr. Harris and I have said that we would not mandate vaccines in the state of Alabama,” Ivey said on Monday. “I am supportive of a voluntary vaccine and by signing this bill into law, I am only further solidifying that conviction.”

Ivey concluded her statement by urging residents to get the jab.

“I made the choice to get the COVID-19 vaccine and glad for the peace of mind it brings,” Ivey added. “I encourage any Alabamian who has not gotten their shot to roll up their sleeves, and if you have questions, consult with your health care provider.”

Vaccine hesitancy has been a bit of an issue in the nation’s attempts to reopen, but leader like Ivey have long understood that personal freedom is a far more powerful expression of American life than blind subservience will ever be.
