Biden Has 'Highly' Hypocritical Response to Griner Sentence

In just the latest strange twist to the tale of the US-Russia relationship, an American star athlete has now been sentenced to 9 years in a Russian jail.

Britney Griner, one of the WNBA’s most prominent players, was arrested weeks ago after Russian security personnel found a cannabis vape pen in her luggage as she entered the country.  Now, as Russia imbues Griner with the near-maximum sentence for such an offense, US President Joe Biden has a highly hypocritical response.

President Joe Biden said Thursday that the guilty verdict and nine-year sentence handed by a Russian court to American basketball star Brittney Griner is “unacceptable,” calling for her immediate release.

“My administration will continue to work tirelessly and pursue every possible avenue to bring Brittney and Paul Whelan home safely,” Biden said.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who discussed a proposal to bring the American detainees home with his Russian counterpart last week, said Griner’s sentencing “further compounds the injustice of her wrongful detention.”

But, at the same time that the Biden administration suggests that Griner be freed and sent home, the White House is doing nothing about the antiquated marijuana laws here in the United States, that have locked away a massive glut of nonviolent offenders.

If an American accused of a cannabis crime in Russia has the backing of the President, why shouldn’t those of us here in the country get the same treatment?
