With much of the world wondering just what it’s going to take to see NATO and their western allies get directly involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US Secretary of State has made a major announcement this week.

The Biden administration has remained largely “risk-averse” in dealing with the Kremlin, on account of Vladimir Putin’s continued threats of using nuclear weapons to quell any interference with his “genocide”.   This approach has been blasted by experts in recent days, but the latest maneuverer by Secretary of State Antoni Blinken could change that perception.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken formally announced Wednesday that the United States government believes Russia committed war crimes in Ukraine and should be prosecuted.

In a statement, Blinken repeatedly raised the brutality in the city of Mariupol, Ukraine and he compared it to similar Russian campaigns against Grozny in the Second Chechen War and Aleppo during the Syrian civil war.

Blinken even laid out some of the most egregious actions taken by the invading army.

“Russia’s forces have destroyed apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, critical infrastructure, civilian vehicles, shopping centers, and ambulances, leaving thousands of innocent civilians killed or wounded,” he said.

Many of the buildings Russian forces have hit are “clearly identifiable as in-use by civilians,” Blinken said, citing bombings of the Mariupol maternity hospital and a theater there that was clearly marked with the word for children in Russian “in huge letters visible from the sky.”

The decision comes as President Joe Biden is preparing for an all-important summit in Brussels to discuss the Russian attack on Ukraine.
