Border Workers Miss Paycheck in Longest Shutdown EVER
As of midnight last night, the American government has now reached uncharted waters…at least in terms of the partial shutdown we currently face.
Neither the democrats nor the President are ready to cave, with both sides vacating each other’s space for the weekend.
This has left the American people in a bind. Of course, we have our convictions about border security, and we certainly haven’t been shy about sharing them, but the general sense seems to be that enough is enough. Even the most staunch supporters of the President are beginning to realize the dangers of such a lengthy stalemate.
In an ironic and awful twist to the tale, a great many who work on the border itself went without pay this week.
President Trump saluted a Blackhawk helicopter hovering over the Rio Grande on Thursday, seeking to highlight the need for $5.7 billion for his trademark border wall to stop what he calls an “invasion.”
Next to the president stood a Customs and Border Protection officer and a Border Patrol agent. Both were working unpaid during the partial government shutdown, which on Friday tied the record for the longest in U.S. history.
Among the roughly 800,000 federal employees who’ve gone without pay in the three weeks since the shutdown began are tens of thousands of Border Patrol agents, Customs and Border Protection officers, immigration judges and Coast Guard crews — the workers on the front lines of the border security problems that the White House and Congress have been fighting over.
What once seemed a valid negotiating tactic is looking more and more like a hostage situation in the eyes of Americans of all political leanings.
Without a solution on the horizon, We The People are growing restless and united in our angst…a reality that the Washington swamp-dwellers should be very wary of.
