As if these Olympics weren’t already scandalous enough, here comes the Kremlin to up the ante.
The games, which are taking place in genocidal China, have already had their fair share of controversies. There are the claims of China-bias from referees, inhumane conditions for athletes, and now a worker has interrupted a ski race, forcing one athlete to have a “do-over”.
And, almost predictably, Russia found itself in the middle of a doping scandal, (again), which forced the delay of one of the figure skating medals.
To make matters even worse, the athlete who failed the test was only 15 years old.
Olympic figure skating sensation Kamila Valieva cracked a smile during a training session on Thursday despite being the focus of Russia’s latest drug testing scandal just a day earlier.Trending:
Valieva, who is the favorite to win gold in the women’s individual event next week, skated with teammate Alexandra Trusova during a 30-minute training session but looked unfazed by the recent reports that she tested positive for a banned substance which delayed Tuesday’s medal ceremony for the team event where the Russian Olympic Committee won gold.
And here is where it gets cruel and unusual.
Little details are known about the situation which is complicated by the 15-year-old’s age.
The ROC, followed by the United States and Japan, were to be honored during their official medal ceremony on Tuesday, but the event was pulled from the schedule without explanation.
If Russia is disqualified from the event, it would not only add a bit of grime to their already-tarnished reputation when it comes to Olympic doping, but it would provide the United States with its first ever gold medal in the discipline.
