As Donald Trump’s legal troubles continue to manifest, sometimes out of his control of late, the former President is now taking drastic action.
Trump, who has hinted at plans to run for the White House again in 2024, has been on the receiving end of a nonstop stream of investigations, many believed to be instigated with the intent of keeping him away from politics. One such investigation centers around the Trump Organization, and is being helmed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, (who may also still be running for the governorship of the Empire State).
Trump is now suing James in an effort to end this probe.
Former President Donald Trump and his company filed a federal lawsuit Monday in an effort to block New York state Attorney General Letitia James from continuing to investigate his business.
James’ civil probe of the Trump Organization is focused on claims that the company misstated the value of certain real estate assets to obtain favorable loan and insurance rates, while lowering its tax obligations. Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen originally made those claims in testimony to Congress.Trending:
The attorney general’s investigation is mirrored by a criminal probe being conducted by the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.
The timing appeared to have a clear impetus.
The suit comes nearly two weeks after news that James was seeking to question Trump under oath on Jan. 7 in a deposition for her investigation.
Ronald Fischetti, a lawyer representing Trump in the New York investigations, told CNBC in a phone call Monday morning that they plan to file a motion to quash that deposition sometime soon after Christmas.
Trump has long insisted that the investigation was little more than a “witch hunt”, and that the breadth of the investigation proves that James is a bit desperate to discover something.
