Elon Musk Gives Grim Outlook to Twitter Employees

Elon Musk’s long-stymied and barely- completed takeover of social media platform Twitter is off to a rocky start, no doubt, as the Tesla CEO attempts to conjure profit from the historically unprofitable company.

Some of his schemes to right the ship have been laughable, including charging a monthly fee to have a “verified” check mark next to your username – a policy that has created a free-for-all of official-looking accounts publishing all manner of horrible and nonsensical things that, without greater investigation, will appear attributed to some rather powerful people.

Now, on the heels of this still-brewing controversy, Musk has sent his first missive to his new employees, and it’s not exactly a cheery one.

In a mass email Wednesday afternoon, Musk said there was “no way to sugarcoat the message” and that employees should expect changes concerning office policy, according to Bloomberg News.

The email allegedly said Musk will discontinue remote work and will be requiring employees to be in the office for at least 40 hours per week. Any exceptions would need his personal approval.

Musk reportedly said he expected half of Twitter’s revenue to come through a subscription service and his newly proposed verification fee. He also said content creators will be able to monetize their pages to supporters, without further elaboration.

And then, in an even more worrisome message:

“Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months. We will keep what works & change what doesn’t,” he wrote.

Musk has already laid off nearly half of the staff of the social network, leading many to wonder just what the future holds for the powerful communication tool.
