FBI Questions Former White House Lawyers Over Mar-a-Lago Documents

As the January 6th select committee’s grand show continues to fizzle and flail, it appears that a new avenue to defaming former President Donald Trump has materialized for the Biden administration – this time in response to a number of documents that Trump was storing at his Florida home.

Days ago, the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago, the former President’s estate in the Sunshine State, allegedly in pursuit of a cache of documents being sought by the National Archives.  The move infuriated the nation, who saw this as a political attack on Biden’s likely 2024 opponent.

Now the FBI is expanding this effort by interviewing a number of former White House lawyers.

Pat A. Cipollone and Patrick F. Philbin, the White House counsel and his deputy under President Donald J. Trump, were interviewed by the F.B.I. in connection with boxes of sensitive documents that were stored at Mr. Trump’s residence in Florida after he left office, three people familiar with the matter said.

The news marked a serious escalation in the case.

Mr. Cipollone and Mr. Philbin are the most senior people who worked for Mr. Trump who are known to have been interviewed by investigators after the National Archives referred the matter to the Justice Department this year. The interviews are a sign of the intensity of the investigation into how sensitive government material left the White House with Mr. Trump and remained at his Palm Beach, Fla., residence, Mar-a-Lago, for more than a year.

The FBI and DOJ have repeatedly defended the raid as justified, despite an incredible amount of blowback from the American electorate.
