Judge Snaps at Trump Lawyers Attempting to Block Jan 6th Document Release

Former President Donald Trump is in the midst of a tenuous legal battle that could shape the next several months of US politics, and it does not appear as though things are going his way at the moment.

Lawyers for the former Commander in Chief are in court this week attempting to block the release of a trove of documents from the White House that detail the President’s conversations and motivations on January 6th.  These documents, which have been requested by the Democratically-led select committee investigating the attempted insurrection, would almost certainly be weaponized in an attempt to alter the outcome of the 2022 midterms, and even the 2024 presidential race itself…all under the keen eye of the ever-opportunistic Nancy Pelosi.

A judge this week was not very receptive to the former President’s argument.

Trump’s lawyers said the request for a wide range of documents is invalid because the committee doesn’t have unlimited power of investigation and can only seek material directly related to writing legislation.

“Are you really saying the president’s notes, talking points, and records of telephone conversations on January 6 have no bearing on the investigation” asked U.S. District Court Judge Tanya S. Chutkan.

“These are about who the president was talking to as people were breaking windows and climbing into the Capitol.”

And when Trump’s lawyers asked the judge to review every document before signing off on their release, there was more pushback.

The judge seemed equally skeptical of the claim by Trump’s lawyers that the material is protected by executive privilege and that the judge should review each document before it can be turned over to Congress.

“Wouldn’t that always mean the production would stall to a snail’s pace?” she asked.

Chutkan did take exception to the broadness of some of the committee’s requests however, indicating that the Democrats weren’t going to get everything they wanted just yet.
