Lake Tahoe Faces Closures After Terrifying Illness Discovered in Chipmunks
While we’ve all been inundated with news about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the delta variant that is ravaging the nation currently, there is another worrisome outbreak taking place in one of America’s most scenic destinations.
The location is beautiful Lake Tahoe, and the contagion in question is none other than the black death.
Officials are closing some areas on the south shore of Lake Tahoe after some chipmunks tested positive for plague.
Advertisement - story continues belowThe Tahoe Daily Tribune reports that the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, Kiva Beach and their parking areas will be off limits through Friday.
During that time, the U.S. Forest Service will be conducting vector control treatments to those areas.
El Dorado County spokeswoman Carla Hass said the chipmunks that were tested had no contact with any people.
Officials are asking that visitors to the general area avoid interacting with any wildlife, and have suggested that pet owners may need to take extra care while watching their furry friends.
The US Forest Service hopes to have these locations open again by the weekend.
