MAGA Miffed at Mitch McConnell After Latest Statement About J6
With the 2022 midterm elections set to shake our nation’s political stage to its core in the coming months, there are fears on both sides of the aisle that the two main parties are facing upheaval within their ranks.
For the Democrats, it’s a matter of reeling in the radical left; folks like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, whose socialism-adjacent views are going to drive away the midwestern moderates that the party needs to stay competitive.
For the Republicans, the split between the old guard and the MAGA Movement is a clear threat to the future of the party.
This week, Mitch McConnell drove a wedge into this conservative chasm with a bold statement regarding the events of January 6th, 2021.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell described the Capitol riot as a “violent insurrection” Tuesday—and criticized the Republican National Committee for censuring two party members on the House panel investigating the attack. The Jan. 6, 2021 riot “was a violent insurrection with the purpose of trying to prevent a peaceful transfer of power after a legitimately certified election,” McConnell told reporters, per the Hill. “That’s what it was.”
This was in response to a move by the RNC that many within the GOP found controversial.
On Friday, the RNC, led by chairwoman Ronna McDaniel passed a resolution accusing Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger of joining “Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse.”
The GOP was hotly divided over the use of the term “legitimate political discourse”, with the MAGA Movement seeing it as a nod to their stance, while some of the more centrist Republicans shuddered to think that this would be the new normal.
