Migrant Caravan Turns to Anarchy to Forcefully Enter Mexico

The caravan’s timing and escalation of violence could become an issue in the American midterm elections.

With Donald Trump’s heavy-handed push for border reform still very much on the minds of US citizens, a massive mob of South American migrants are looking to push back against the President.

The tactic of creating massive migrant caravans to challenge the idea of national sovereignty is nothing new.  In fact, this will likely feel like deja vu to a great many Americans who recall a similar incident just months ago.

In the case of their latest attempt to illegally cross into Mexico and, eventually into the US, these migrants have turned chaotic and violent…something that does not bode well for when they reach the border between Mexico and America.

Migrants traveling in a mass caravan burst through a Guatemalan border fence and streamed by the thousands toward Mexican territory on Friday, defying Mexican authorities’ entreaties for an orderly crossing and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of retaliation.

On the Mexican side of a border bridge, they were met by a phalanx of police with riot shields. About 50 managed to push their way through before officers unleashed pepper spray and the rest retreated.

The gates were closed again, and police used a loudspeaker to address the masses, saying, “We need you to stop the aggression.”

And it gets worse:

Mexican federal police chief Manelich Castilla, speaking from the border town of Ciudad Hidalgo, told Foro TV that his forces achieved their main objective of preventing a violent breach by the 3,000-plus migrants. In a separate interview with Milenio television, he accused people not part of the caravan of attacking police with firecrackers and rocks.

“It will be under the conditions that have been said since the start,” Castilla said. “Orderly, with established procedures, never through violence or force as a group of people attempted.”

Given the timing of the caravan, whose arrival at the gates of the United States could coincide with a particularly nasty midterm election battle, there are concerns that this sort of violence could plague the border near enough to polling day to make a political impact in America.

President Trump has previously floated the possibility of sending the military to border to maintain order.
