One of the most pressing shortages facing hospitals during the Covid-19 emergency is a lack of ventilators. These machines can keep patients breathing when they no longer can on their own, and they can cost around $30,000 each. Now, a rapidly assembled volunteer team of engineers, physicians, computer scientists, and others, centered at MIT, is working to implement a safe, inexpensive alternative for emergency use, which could be built quickly around the world.

The team, called MIT E-Vent (for emergency ventilator), was formed on March 12, 2020, in response to the rapid spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. Its members were brought together by the exhortations of doctors, friends, and a sudden flood of mail referencing a project done a decade ago in the MIT class 2.75 (Medical Device Design). Students working in consultation with local physicians designed a simple ventilator device that could be built with about $100 worth of parts. They published a paper detailing their design and testing, but the work ended at that point. Now, with a significant global need looming, a new team, linked to that course, has resumed the project at a highly accelerated pace.

There’s a whole heck of a lot to unpack regarding the death of Minnesota man George Floyd and former police officer Derek Chauvin. Let’s just get right to the latest news. From Daily Wire: On Friday, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner issued a report saying a preliminary autopsy showed no evidence that George Floyd died of strangulation and traumatic asphyxia. Floyd’s arrest was captured on video and went viral earlier this week. During the incident, at least one officer is seen kneeling on the 46-year-old’s neck while Floyd repeatedly tells him he can’t breath. Floyd died soon following the arrest. Violent rioters reportedly stormed a police precinct in New York City on Friday and lit law enforcement vehicles on fire. Not cool, Lori.

When Republicans in office disagreed with Barack Obama, at least the vast majority did so in a professional manner. The same cannot be said about Democrats in the era of Trump. Enter the far-left mayor of Chicago, via Fox News: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot blasted President Trump and invoked an expletive Friday in response to his tweet after three days of protests in Minneapolis, Minn., when he called the protesters “THUGS” and tweeted that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Lightfoot said, “Donald Trump’s comment last night was profoundly dangerous. And we must stand firm in solidarity and say this is totally unacceptable no matter who is the speaker.” She added, “He wants to show failures on the part of Democratic local leaders, to throw red meat to his base. His goal is to polarize, to destabilize local government and inflame racist urges. We can absolutely not let him prevail. And I will code what I really want to say to Donald Trump. It’s two words. It begins with F and it ends with U.” Here’s a screenshot of Trump’s tweets: And here’s what Twitter decided to do with those tweets: A Lightfoot tweet: https://twitter.com/chicagosmayor/status/1244762897743351808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1244762897743351808&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fchicago.suntimes.com%2Fcity-hall%2F2020%2F4%2F6%2F21211314%2Fgetting-roots-done-not-essential-getting-hair-cut-mayor-lightfoot VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah7xQHo9WOQ
