NTSB Demands All Vehicles be Equipped with Alcohol Monitor

Drunk driving is unacceptable.  Full stop.

Readers should not get the impression that anything written here dismisses that irrefutable fact, but overreaching government surveillance is also unacceptable.  The two things can both be true.

That is why a new recommendation by the NTSB has some car owners concerned.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is officially recommending that all new cars and trucks be equipped with alcohol detection devices.

The decision comes following an investigation into a head-on collision that took place on New Year’s Day 2021 in Avenel, California, between a speeding SUV being driven by an impaired driver and a pickup truck that left nine dead.

”Technology could’ve prevented this heartbreaking crash — just as it can prevent the tens of thousands of fatalities from impaired-driving and speeding-related crashes we see in the U.S. annually,” NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said in a report.

“We need to implement the technologies we have right here, right now to save lives.”

But “could have” prevented is the key statement here.

Vehicle breath-alcohol devices are routinely bested by those looking to drive while intoxicated, often by a complacent friend or spouse, and are completely ineffective once a vehicle has been started.

In other words, only those seeking to obey the law will obey the law – others will not, just as it is today – and all we’ll accomplish is adding another level of surveillance to the slippery slope that we’re already on, spilling us into an Orwellian nightmare a la 1984.
