Obama Speech Pushes for More Social Media Censorship

One of the hottest topics in this great nation of ours today is free speech – a cornerstone of our freedom and one of the rights that sets America apart from the rest of the world.

The ability to speak freely in the United States has been largely co-opted by private corporations in recent years, as social media companies continue to gobble up and privatize much of the “public square” over time.  This allows these Silicon Valley sultans to determine just what people can say in the places where it matters the most and has the most powerful reach.

And while the conservatives of our nation are railing against this corporate whitewashing of our national discussion, it appears as though progressives have moved to the sidelines to cheer it on.

Former President Barack Obama in a major speech on Thursday called for more regulation of social media content, in order to diminish “disinformation.”

The former president delivered a speech on the issue at Stanford University after spending months studying the subject.

He described himself as “pretty close to a First Amendment absolutist” but immediately clarified that it did not apply to social media companies.

“The First Amendment is a check on the power of the state. It doesn’t apply to private companies like Facebook and Twitter,” he said, calling for more “value judgements” on content moderation and censorship on social media.

Then, in a fascistic lurch toward authoritarianism…

“While content moderation can limit the distribution of clearly dangerous content, it doesn’t go far enough,” Obama added.

Americans, by our very DNA, should be erring on the side of freedom, but the Democrats don’t seem to have gotten that memo.
