Pence's Secret Service Detail Phoned Loved Ones on January 6th
As the Capitol was breached on January 6th, 2021, there was a great deal of uncertainty about how the incident itself would come to an end.
This was unprecedented in our modern history, with supporters of then-President Donald Trump marching to and into the Capitol to demand that Congress “stop the steal”. And, as the violence manifested itself, members of Congress and then-Vice President Mike Pence were quickly evacuated to the emergency tunnels deep below the building.
It was during that time that Pence’s Secret Service agents allegedly phoned home to say “goodbye” to their loved ones.
Members of Mike Pence’s Secret Service detail phoned loved ones to say their final farewells on Jan. 6, 2021, as rioters calling for Pence’s head came within feet of the former vice president, it was revealed on Thursday.
The agents feared for their lives as they made a frantic effort to evacuate Pence from the Senate chamber while angry rioters called for the vice president to be hanged.
“The members of the VP detail at this time were starting to fear for their own lives,” an unidentified security official told the select panel investigating the Capitol riot.
The official was distraught by what they heard.
“There was a lot of yelling, a lot of very personal calls over the radio, so it was disturbing. I don’t like talking about it,” he testified.
The new information was made public during Thursday’s televised hearing from the select committee investigating the events of January 6th.
The group plans to resume public hearings in September, just in time to influence the 2022 midterm elections.
