Police Reveal Names of Officers Involved in Andrew Brown Shooting

The town of Elizabeth City, North Carolina is still reeling from the death of an unarmed black man at the hands of local police, who were executing a search warrant when the death occurred.

Local officials have been unable to answer many questions about the incident, due in part to the fact that North Carolina law puts the onus on the court system to decide whether or not police body camera footage can be released to the public.  A judge this week refused that request, which has led to further outrage among citizens and activists.

Perhaps in an effort to counter the perceived narrative that there is some sort of cover-up in process, the local sheriff’s office released the names of the officers involved.

A North Carolina sheriff on Thursday released the names of seven deputies placed on administrative leave following the police shooting death of Andrew Brown Jr. last week and reinstated four of them.

Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten said three of the deputies fired their weapons — investigator Daniel Meads, deputy Robert Morgan, and corporal Aaron Lewellyn — and remain on leave as part of the ongoing investigation, Wooten said.

“More investigation is necessary into the three deputies who did fire their weapons and they will remain on administrative leave pending completion of the internal investigation and/or the criminal investigation being conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation,” the sheriff added.

The others — Lt. Steven Judd, Sgt. Michael Swindell, Sgt. Kenneth Bishop, and Sgt. Joel Lunsford — were determined to not have opened fire on Brown and had their duties reinstated, Wooten said.

The local judge who blocked the release of the footage has stated that they video may become publicly available in the future, but that it could take 30 to 40 days to make that happen.
