Russia Holds Europe Hostage Over Invasion Sanctions

The Kremlin’s unwillingness to accept the consequences of their actions has been a staple of the Russian government for decades now, and the ethos has been turbocharged during their invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s illegal and immoral genocide in Ukraine was not taken lightly by the world at large, with sanctions and other penalties rolling in with each week that the combat continues.

But rather than accept this as a cause-and-effect sort of situation, Russia is attempting to play the victim here, and now threatening to freeze Europe out of much-needed energy for the winter unless those sanctions are lifted.

The Kremlin warned on Monday that Russian gas deliveries to Europe will continue to be severely limited as long as Western sanctions remain in place.

“Problems in pumping have arisen because of the sanctions imposed against our country,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said Monday, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency, adding the measures have caused “absolute turmoil.”

Flows through the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream pipeline were stopped indefinitely on Friday, officially due to a malfunctioning gas turbine, although European officials doubt that story.

Russia’s excuse was rather transparent, of course.

The Kremlin argues sanctions — particularly those levied by Germany and the U.K. — prevent Russia from repairing a series of turbines needed to pump gas along the undersea pipeline, which was only using 20 percent of its capacity before being shut down on Friday.

“It is precisely these sanctions that the Western states have introduced that have brought the situation to what we see now,” Peskov said.

Russia appears to have energy resources at the top of their priority list at the moment, with the invaders attempting to connect their homeland to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant after troops reached its location in Ukraine.
