Russia Still a Threat to 2020 Election, Warns FBI

These days, the FBI’s word is certainly taken with a grain of salt, but, for the sake of our democracy, we might want to listen to their latest warning.

While there are plenty of interpretations of the Mueller report floating around the polito-sphere, one fact stands undebated:  Russia enthusiastically attempt to undermine the 2016 presidential election in the United States.  Of course, this isn’t an aberration in The Kremlin’s behavior, as Putin and his predecessors seem hellbent on creating a world of chaos on which they can scavenge in the aftermath.

Given the turbulent political world we live in today, we have never learn the full extent of 2016’s maladies, but we had better try to before 2020…because Russia isn’t planning to let up.

The F.B.I. director warned anew on Friday about Russia’s continued meddling in American elections, calling it a “significant counterintelligence threat.” The bureau has shifted additional agents and analysts to shore up defenses against foreign interference, according to a senior F.B.I. official.

“We recognize that our adversaries are going to keep adapting and upping their game,” Christopher A. Wray, the F.B.I. director, said Friday in a speech in Washington, citing the presence of Russian intelligence officers in the United States and the Kremlin’s record of malign influence operations.

Wray says that the FBI is not only studying the attempts Russia made during 2016, but 2018 as well.

No matter what side of the aisle you land on, Putin and Co. are still a threat, and Mother Russia is not our ally.
