San Diego City Council Increases Police Budget By $27M, Despite Calls For Defunding

All across America we’ve heard radical leftist protesters call for police departments to be defunded and the money rerouted to social programs they say will prevent crime and reduce the encounters between black men and local law enforcement.

This all comes as a result of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis law enforcement. It goes without saying this is a really bad idea, but since when has that ever stopped liberals from pushing for something crazy anyway?

However, the San Diego City Council has responded to calls for defunding the police by actually increasing their budget by $27 million. You can guarantee that’s going to make a couple of folks really, really mad.

Here’s more on this from The Washington Examiner:

The San Diego City Council voted almost unanimously, 8–1, on Monday to increase its police budget by $27 million, pushing the total budget to $566 million, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The move to expand the budget comes as the city reportedly received more than 4,000 phone calls and emails calling for the budget to be decreased as a response to the growing protests over police brutality following the death of George Floyd.

“Defund this city-sanctioned militia that is terrorizing black people,” resident Breana Clark said to the council before the vote. “We need resources in our communities, not these thugs wearing a badge. You have blood on your hands. Get busy.”

Adam Woodnut said, “The police do not need more funding. These funds should instead be reallocated to addressing issues such as poverty, homelessness, mental health, and the well-being of our communities of color.”

Wow. Pretty vague, right?

Here we have the humanistic roots of the progressive ideology laid out for all to see. Leftists think that humans can rise above all of these challenges Woodnut listed above because to them, all of the problems people face as a whole are external problems. Get rid of the external problem and you get utopia.

Wrong. People are fundamentally flawed and sinful, which is a heart condition. It’s an internal problem. Getting rid of poverty won’t stop crime. Reduce it dramatically? Sure. Get rid of it? No. Not by a long shot.

Reduce police presence and the bad guys will come out of the woodwork, regardless of the monetary investment made into a specific community. Why? Sin. Internal problems require internal solutions. Only God, through the gospel of Christ, can change the inside of a person to such a dramatic degree.

That’s the one solution no one is pushing for.
