Secret Service Provides J6 Committee with Agents' Cell Phone Numbers

The January 6th select committee has been hard at work creating a conspiratorial narrative the likes of which Hollywood itself might deem too wild for the silver screen, and the latest fork in the road has the group butting heads with one of the nation’s most prestigious law enforcement institutions.

That’s because the committee seems to think that the Secret Service committed a nefarious act when they lost text messages from the days surrounding the Capitol riot, despite the agency’s continued insistence that the data was the victim of a system-wide upgrade.

Now, as pressure from the committee mounts, the Secret Service is providing agent-specific cell phone information.

The U.S. Secret Service has given the House Jan. 6 committee a listing of agency-issued cell phone numbers belonging to agents based in Washington, D.C., for the period the panel is investigating, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The move is an unusual step amid heightened scrutiny of the agency’s cooperation with the congressional panel investigating last year’s insurrection and the role then-President Donald Trump played in it.

The committee can now determine which agents’ call records they may want to review and, if they decide to do so, could either request them directly or conceivably issue subpoenas to their cell phone providers, an official familiar with the situation explained.

And that’s not all.

At the same time, the inspector general responsible for the Secret Service has obtained a listing of personal cell phones as part of its own investigation connected to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The move comes as the committee’s convoluted theories continue to grow unwieldy and unnerving, and as they face the looming 2022 midterms that could spell the end of their work altogether.
