'Snake Island' Ukrainian Troops May Be Alive After Russian Warship Attack

If there is anything that we’ve learned over the course of the last several days, it is that the Ukrainian people are about as resilient as they come.

In the face of the grand Russian army, Ukraine has stood tall.  The invasion is now going on day 6, when Vladimir Putin and others had only planned for such fighting to last 48-72 hours.  And, in spite of the bloodshed and the terror, troops and ordinary civilians in the Ukraine are demonstrating the sort of fortitude that we often only find in movies.

One of the first inclinations that Ukraine would not go down without a fight came from a small coastal area known as “Snake Island”, where troops responded to a Russian naval vessels demands to surrender by radioing back “Russian warship, go **** yourself”.  That vessel then opened fire, and the world began to mourn the loss of these brave and bombastic soldiers.

But now, new reports appear to indicate that Snake Island’s would-be saviors are still alive.

It was originally believed that the plucky Ukrainians had then been fired upon and killed, but the Ukrainian Navy has since confirmed that they were captured instead. “We are very happy to learn that our brothers are alive and well,” it declared in a statement.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, who stated last August that “this island, like the rest of our territory, is Ukrainian land, and we will defend it with all our might,” had said that the guards would be awarded the country’s highest military honor.

The incident provided an early example of the fog of war and its effects, as reporting on the conflict is clouded by distance, efforts to capitalize on potential PR victories, and the general confusion over the multiplicity of events occurring at any one time.

As of this writing, Ukraine is still holding strong against the Russian onslaught, but Kyiv has begun to take heavy shelling, and there’s no telling what other horrid tricks Putin may have up his sleeve yet.
