Three Americans who have been held prisoner in the communist country of North Korea have officially been released and are on their way back home to the United States, following a surprise diplomatic mission by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The news was announced by President Trump himself on Wednesday morning via Twitter.

Pompeo is currently en route to America with the prisoners who are said to be in good health. The president stated that he is planning on meeting them at Andrews Air Force Base as soon as they arrive.

Pompeo told reporters during the initial leg of the flight to Japan that he’s “thrilled” to have the Americans back. Trump also said that a date and location have now been set for his meeting with Kim Jong Un.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Trump “appreciates leader Kim Jong Un’s action to release these American citizens, and views this as a positive gesture of goodwill.”

“The three Americans appear to be in good condition and were all able to walk on the plane without assistance,” she said.

Kim Dong Chul, a South Korea-born U.S. citizen and former Virginia resident, was sentenced in April 2016 to 10 years in prison with hard labor after being convicted of espionage. He reportedly ran a trade and hotel service company in Rason, a special economic zone on North Korea’s border with Russia.

Tony Kim was detained at Pyongyang’s airport in April 2017 and accused of unspecified “hostile acts” against the regime. He taught accounting at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. In a statement, Kim’s family thanked “all of those who have worked toward and contributed to his return home.”

The third prisoner is Kim Hak Song, an ethnic Korean who was born in China, was detained last year for what was described as “hostile acts.” Song’s job consisted of working in agricultural development on a farm that was owned by the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. This was founded by donations given by various Christian groups.

We are literally watching historic developments that several other president’s have failed to achieve unfold before our very eyes, and it’s utterly astounding.

In the short time Trump has been in office, he’s pulled us out of the Iran deal, aided in the denuclearization of North Korea, freed prisoners, and cut taxes.

Yet the only thing we’ll hear about in the media is their sorry attempts at digging up scandal.

It’s sad on so many levels.

Regardless, we all rejoice with the families of these men who will be getting their loved ones back after such a long time apart.
