Uvalde Police Chief Learns His Fate Months After Massacre

The tragedy that occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas shocked the nation, and in more ways than one.

As a teenage gunman took the lives the 19 students and 2 teachers, police officers from a number of varying law enforcement agencies waited outside the school, refusing to engage the shooter.  When concerned parents and other bystanders sought to intervene, police detained them, refusing to allow them to take matters into their own hands.

Then, CCTV footage from inside the school showed well-armed droves of police simply standing around, as the gunman laid waste to classrooms just a few dozen feet away.

The law enforcement response was so horrendous that one Uvalde police chief has now lost his job.

Uvalde school police chief Pete Arredondo was terminated by the district’s board on Wednesday, exactly three months after a shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

Almost unbelievably, Arredondo has been defiant.

Arredondo, who has been harshly criticized for his response to the shooting, did not attend Wednesday’s meeting, his attorney said.

“Chief Arredondo will not participate in his own illegal and unconstitutional public lynching and respectfully requests the Board immediately reinstate him, with all backpay and benefits and close the complaint as unfounded,” Arredondo’s attorney, George Hyde, wrote in a 17-page letter that was sent out less than an hour before the meeting.

Uvalde residents could be heard decrying Arrendondo as a “coward” for not appearing as the hearing.
