Each and every one of us has a deep-seated fear of embarrassment.  We hate to be humiliated, to know that people are going to talk about our shortcomings for the foreseeable future, perhaps even behind our backs.

And for some of us, these fears are very specific.

Some of us despise the idea of public speaking.  For others, it’s having to sing in front of other people.  Some even have dreams of being naked in front of their peers, embarrassed in front of what feels like the whole world, in an incident that you don’t believe that you’ll ever live down.

For one Minor League Baseball player, just such a knuckleheaded moment has arrived, and it won’t soon be forgotten by his teammates.

Thursday night in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Louis Cardinals minor league infielder Delvin Perez had an embarrassing moment against the Gwinnett Stripers, the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Perez launched a 1-1 slider high into the left field. As soon as he connected, Perez began to “pimp” what he thought was a home run, flipping his bat as he began rounding the bases.

But…

The problem? Perez flew out to left field for the first out of the sixth inning.

Thinking he had hit a long home run, Perez put his head down and got halfway to home plate before realizing that he had hit a routine fly ball.

The bizarre moment was captured on video:

Perez says the wind likely knocked the ball out of the sky, relaying that the catcher also believed the ball had been homered before it was caught in deep left field.
