“Breakthrough is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds,” reads the description of the trailer on YouTube.
Led by an all-star cast, Breakthrough is the true story of John Smith, a Missouri boy who fell into the freezing waters of Lake St. Louis in 2015.
The film is based on a memoir written by John’s mother, Joyce Smith, The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection.
After John’s life-threatening submersion in the lake, he was retrieved but showed no signs of life for an entire hour. Refusing to accept his death, Joyce called out to God in fervent prayer, interceding for her son. The result was nothing short of miraculous, and her story has gone on to inspire millions.
“I’ve had messages from people in Philippines, Germany, Sweden saying thank God you’re alive and we cannot wait to see this film,” John revealed in an interview with KSDK.
Breakthrough stars Topher Grace, Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, and Marcel Ruiz, and is one of the first faith-based projects executive-produced by NBA All-Star Steph Curry. CBN News explains it is also directed by veteran television director Roxann Dawson.
The film’s producer is Devon Franklin, the man behind the 2016’s faith-based hit “Miracles from Heaven.” According to Deadline Hollywood, Franklin, a studio executive-turned-preacher, helped the Smiths find a literary agent and develop the book into a film.
Breakthrough is set to premiere in theaters nationwide April 12, 2019. Watch the trailer for this beautiful story in the video below (you might want to grab some tissues!)
Praise God for doing such incredible miracles in the lives of his children that even the entertainment industry takes notice!
