When This Pastor's Life Was Nearly Taken By Bizarre Accident, an Unexpected Miracle Occurred

Church should be a place to come alive in Christ, not a place to die. For one Fort Worth, Texas pastor, however, the latter came very close to being a reality.

When Pastor Evan Risher was ringing in the new year with his congregation and some powerful preaching, a strange sound caught him off-guard.

“It sounded almost like a whirlwind,” Risher shared with NBC5, said pointing to the ceiling above the stage of Ramp Church.

In video captured of the incident, Pastor Risher is in the middle of what seems to be a gripping ‘watch night’ sermon when a loud thud interrupts him. Immediately, the church’s armed security guards whisked Pastor Risher off the stage to check him over.

“When they rushed me off the stage and checked the premises they found this bullet on the stage,” Risher revealed, holding a .40 caliber bullet that shot through the ceiling.

At first, the 300 people in the congregation were shocked and scared. Undaunted and unharmed, however, Pastor Risher resumed preaching, grasping the bullet that nearly ended his life, and the church erupted into praise once more.

“I was speechless, I was scared,” Risher later recalled in an interview. “It shook me, but it didn’t break me.”

The source of the stray bullet will likely remain a mystery. Although authorities initiated an investigation, NBC5 reported that the incident at Ramp Church was just one of 63 calls the local police received of “shots fired” on New Year’s Eve.

For their part, Risher said that Ramp Church will look into bumping up their ‘watch night’ service by an hour or two, something many other North Texas churches have done, in order to avoid possible problems like this as the rest of the neighborhood begins participating in rowdier, more dangerous ways to celebrate at midnight.

“There has to be another way to have fun, to bring in the New Year,” Risher said.

“It’s kind of ironic to call a moment like this a special moment,” Risher continued. In spite of the fear this stray bullet caused in that moment, Risher says he remains steadfast in Ramp Church’s calling to serve the DFW area. “I believe wholeheartedly that God called us to this area of Fort Worth.”

As a reminder of that night and a symbol of God’s incredible power over life and death, Risher says he plans to keep the bullet in his office: “…Whenever I’m ever having a day where I’m feeling ungrateful,” he said, “I’m going to remember the value of life.”
